Washington, DC—Below is a statement by U.S. Conference of Mayors President Todd Gloria, Mayor of San Diego, on today’s Supreme Court decision to uphold birthright citizenship:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision reaffirms a constitutional principle that has guided our nation for generations and provides much-needed certainty for families, local governments, and the communities America’s mayors serve.

“In cities across the country, children born in the United States grow up as our students, our neighbors, and, one day, our workforce and civic leaders. Stability matters—not only for families, but for schools, local governments, and the communities working every day to help people succeed. Mayors know that uncertainty resulting from federal immigration policy is ultimately managed in our cities.

“While today’s ruling provides important clarity, it does not resolve the broader challenges facing our immigration system. America’s mayors continue to urge Congress to enact bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform that strengthens our communities, supports our workforce, strengthens local economies, and provides the certainty cities, families, and employers deserve.”
