Washington, DC — With the November 3 midterm elections approaching, the nation’s mayors today affirmed their bipartisan commitment to free, fair and secure elections. In a statement from U.S. Conference of Mayors President and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, mayors voiced support for the local election officials who safeguard the process, warned against misinformation that undermines public confidence, and urged every eligible voter to make a plan to vote.

“Voting is one of our most fundamental rights and civic responsibilities as Americans. It is how we make our voices heard, hold elected officials accountable and help shape the future of our communities and our country.

“As Election Day approaches, mayors are united in our commitment to free, fair and secure elections. Every eligible voter should be able to cast their ballot safely, without intimidation and with confidence that their vote will be counted accurately. That means polling places should remain free of any attempts to intimidate voters or discourage them from casting their ballots.

“Across the country, dedicated local election officials and public servants work tirelessly to uphold the integrity of our elections. They are joined by more than 650,000 professional and volunteer election workers who give their time, energy and expertise to make sure every vote is counted accurately. We are deeply grateful for their service. At a time when misinformation can undermine public confidence in the process, their work is more important than ever.

“Regardless of political differences, we share a responsibility to respect the democratic process, uphold the will of voters and ensure a peaceful election season. We encourage every eligible voter to make a plan to vote and urge their family, friends and neighbors to do the same. Our democracy depends on free and fair elections, and we must all do our part to uphold that principle this November.”
