Washington, D.C. – Today, the United States Senate approved the nomination of Eric Garcetti, former mayor of Los Angeles, to be the next U.S. Ambassador to India. In response, U.S. Conference of Mayors CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran issued the following statement.

“America’s mayors are proud to congratulate Eric Garcetti on becoming America’s Ambassador to the Republic of India. This is a big job at an important moment, and President Biden picked the right person to represent America’s interests abroad.

“As he led the second largest city of our nation, Mayor Garcetti was an active member of the United States Conference of Mayors, giving his time and advice on the tough issues our organization and our mayors face. He founded our Latino Alliance and served as Chair of our Infrastructure Task Force. He was also Chair of the C40—the strongest international body of mayors pushing their national governments for action to protect our earth from the harmful impacts of climate change.

“You won’t find a harder working public servant than Eric Garcetti, who has devoted his life to bringing people together to make progress. Garcetti has represented the best of what it means to be a mayor – dedicated, selfless, focused on solving problems, and fiercely loyal to those he served. We know he will bring that sense of purpose to his new diplomatic role. He will always be a mayor to us, but we offer our congratulations to the Ambassador.”
