Washington, DC – The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) applauds members of both parties for coming together to introduce bipartisan gun safety legislation. Welcoming the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which includes several provisions promoted by America’s mayors, USCM CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran issued the following statement:

“With this bill, senators are saving lives and proving that bipartisan progress against gun violence in America is possible. We commend these lawmakers for putting politics aside to make America safer. This commonsense legislation will help keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people, and fewer innocent lives will be lost as a result. Our organization has been advocating for commonsense gun safety legislation since 1968. Mayors and police chiefs have stood together on this critical issue protecting our police officers and our residents. There is more that must be done to protect people in our cities, and America’s mayors will keep fighting for solutions that build on this progress, but the Senate and House must act quickly to send this bill to the president.”
