COVID-19 has impacted police and fire services in cities across the country

Washington, D.C.— On Wednesday, May 27th, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) will hold a media conference call at 12:00 p.m. ET to discuss the impact of COVID-19 and the economic reaction on public safety in cities across America. The leaders of the USCM and IAFF will talk about the financial impact on police and fire personnel and services, urging Congress and this Administration to provide direct fiscal assistance for local governments to ensure these essential services can continue uninterrupted. Many reports in the Conference’s Fiscal Pain Tracker show that cities are being forced to compromise public safety with furloughs or layoffs of police and fire fighters because of revenue shortfalls or consider doing so in the near future.
