Newly formed coalition will bring together mayors of nation’s largest cities; Denver Mayor Mike Johnston to serve as Chair

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) launched its Big City Alliance, a new coalition designed to bring together mayors of the nation’s largest cities to align strategies and lead on the issues shaping the future of urban America.

The Alliance will be chaired by Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and will provide a forum for big city mayors to learn directly from one another, exchange practical insights, and provide peer-to-peer support on shared challenges. The Alliance will also focus on a small number of high-impact priorities where collective advocacy amongst mayors can drive meaningful results.

“All cities face similar challenges and that’s why USCM exists, but certainly there are some experiences unique to the largest cities, and it is helpful to have a space for those conversations,” said USCM President and Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt. “The Big City Alliance will allow for the mayors of our nation’s largest cities to connect directly, share what’s working, and learn from challenges others have already tackled. That kind of real-time collaboration makes all of us more effective.”

This week, during the Conference’s 94th Winter Meeting, the Alliance will hold its inaugural meeting to consider proposed areas of focus and determine how the group can be most useful moving forward. The Winter Meeting will run from January 28 through January 30. More information can be found here.

“Our big cities are on the frontlines of solving America’s hardest problems—from affordability and public safety to homelessness and job creation—this alliance brings those mayors together to share challenges, identify solutions and deliver breakthrough results for the American people,” said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, Chair of USCM’s Big City Alliance.

“We are pleased to have formed our first-ever big city alliance,” said Tom Cochran, USCM CEO and Executive Director. “Working alongside our Small Cities Forum, we will continue to support cities of all sizes and advance the advocacy work of the United States Conference of Mayors.”
