Urge President Trump to Quickly Sign Landmark Housing Bill into Law
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, after months of bipartisan and bicameral negotiations with the Senate, the House passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a major piece of legislation targeting America’s housing affordability crisis. The House action follows yesterday’s passage by the Senate of the compromise bill. For months, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) has urged lawmakers to work in a bipartisan way to advance meaningful housing reforms. In response to the legislation’s passage, USCM President Todd Gloria, Mayor of San Diego, released the following statement:
“Across America, the high cost of housing is squeezing family budgets, forcing difficult choices, and putting the American Dream out of reach for too many. Today, Congress answered the call with bold, bipartisan action to help communities build more homes and expand access to housing people can afford. America’s mayors applaud this landmark legislation because we know the solution is clear: we need more homes, and we need them now.
“This bill represents the most significant step Congress has taken in decades to confront our housing affordability crisis — but it cannot be the last. Mayors are on the front lines of this challenge, and we stand ready to partner with leaders at every level of government to turn this legislation into real results: more homes built, costs lowered, and families given a fair shot at the future.
“We thank Congressional leaders for proving that housing affordability is not a partisan issue — it’s an American priority. We are especially grateful for the leadership of the House Financial Services Committee and Senate Banking Committee, including Chairman French Hill, Ranking Member Maxine Waters, Congressman Mike Flood, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, Chairman Tim Scott, and Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren, whose commitment helped deliver one of the most consequential housing bills in a generation. We urge the President to sign it without delay – American families can’t afford to wait.”
