USCM Previously Endorsed the Critical Housing Affordability Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Earlier this week, the House Financial Services Committee passed the Housing for the 21st Century Act by a bipartisan vote of 50-1. The bill, introduced by Committee Chairman French Hill (R-AR) and co-sponsored by Ranking Member Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Representatives Mike Flood (R-NE) and Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), makes important reforms to boost the supply and bring down the cost of housing in America. The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) recently endorsed the legislation in a letter to lawmakers and called for a vote. Following the committee passage, USCM President David Holt, Mayor of Oklahoma City, released the following statement:
“Housing is the biggest cost in any family budget, and so if our leaders in Washington want to address affordability, they have to act on housing. Fortunately, we are seeing that prioritization in Congress, and we are seeing it on a bipartisan basis. This week brought another milestone with the House committee passage of the Housing for the 21st Century Act. This pragmatic legislation focuses on both proven programs and new reforms that will make it easier to build housing in American cities. We thank the committee leaders and bill authors, including Representatives Hill, Waters, Flood, and Cleaver for leading on this issue. America’s mayors urge the full House to act quickly on this important bipartisan housing legislation in the new year.”
