Mayors continue their vocal support for free and fair trade

Washington, D.C.— Yesterday, the Senate passed S.J. Res. 37, a resolution to end the national emergency declared to impose tariffs on goods imported from Canada. Earlier this week, on behalf of the nation’s mayors, U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran sent a letter to Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), the resolution’s lead sponsor, supporting the effort. In response to the bipartisan Senate passage of the resolution, USCM President Columbus (OH) Mayor Andrew Ginther released the following statement:

“We’re pleased to see a bipartisan group of Senators stand with America’s mayors in support of free and fair trade with Canada. The national emergency declaration and subsequent tariffs triggered a trade conflict with our closest ally, largest trading partner, and critical collaborator in addressing economic and public safety challenges across North America. Already, American families are paying the price through higher costs. It’s time for the national emergency declaration and trade war to end. Bipartisanship and common sense still drive the best public policy. We applaud these senators, Democrats and Republicans, for their leadership and commitment to the common good. America’s mayors stand ready to work together to protect the economic well-being of communities across the nation and we urge the House to pass the measure.”
