America's Promise
Adopted at the 66th Annual Meeting in 1998
WHEREAS, mayors joined with living Presidents, General Colin Powell, national and civic leaders in Philadelphia during April 1997 at the Presidents' Summit for America's Future; and
WHEREAS, mayors and their cities have made the future for their youth a highest priority; and
WHEREAS, America's Promise was created to ensure that the vision and goals of the Presidents' Summit would be fulfilled; and
WHEREAS, mayors answered the call from General Colin Powell to be the local leaders of America's Promise, and reported to him the progress at a Special Session of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Chicago this April; and
WHEREAS, mayors are committed to ensure the five America's Promise Fundamental Resources: - An ongoing relationship with a caring adult; - Safe places to learn and grow; - a healthy start; - a marketable skill through effective education; and - An opportunity to give back through community service,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the U.S. Conference of Mayors endorses the goals of America's Promise and becomes its partner in working for a positive future for the children and young people of our cities and nation.
