Character Counts
Adopted at the in 1996
WHEREAS, the present and future well-being of our society requires an involved, caring citizenry with good moral character; and
WHEREAS, effective character education is based on core ethical values which form the foundation of democratic society, in particular respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, caring, justice and fairness, and civic virtue and citizenship; and
WHEREAS, the character and conduct of our youth reflect the character and conduct of society, and, therefore, every adult has the responsibility to teach and model the core ethical values and every social institution has the responsibility to promote the development of good character; and
WHEREAS, the Character Counts program provides cities an aggressive strategy to promote character development among young people which includes trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The United States Conference of Mayors endorses the Character Counts program and urges mayors to undertake it in their cities.
