Immigration and Naturalization Service

WHEREAS, illegal immigration continues to be a significant problem in American cities; and
WHEREAS, additional funding must be made available to the Immigration and Naturalization Service in the Department of Justice to properly staff regional and state INS offices to combat this problem; and
WHEREAS, Congress is now considering immigration authorization legislation,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the U.S. Conference of Mayuors expresses its appreciation to Congress and the Administration for recent increases in the INS budget and urges further consideration of additional funding, particularly for interior state INS offices; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the U.S. Conference of Mayors urges that enactment of immigration legislation include compensation to local governments for their costs incurred in connection with crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
