Enactment of the Brady Bill and an Assault Weapons Ban
Adopted at the 61st Annual Meeting in 1993
WHEREAS, the availability of handguns and other firearms throughout the United States has contributed significantly to the escalating violence -- in particular, murders -- in many of our cities; and
WHEREAS, some of our cities have experienced terrifying tragedies, including mass murders, which might have been avoided had firearms not been readily available;
WHEREAS, there is an opportunity this year for the enactment of critical gun control legislation because the President of the United States supports both the Brady Bill, which would establish a waiting period for handgun sales, and a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons; and
WHEREAS, women mayors, as a group within the U.S. Conference of Mayors, have singled out gun- related violence as a national problem demanding immediate action,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the U.S. Conference of Mayors commends President Bill Clinton for his strong support of both the Brady Bill and a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the U.S. Conference of Mayors urges Congress to pass both the Brady Bill and a ban on assault weapons this year so that we can stem the tide of gun violence in our cities.
