Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment, and Sports in the Metaverse

Adopted at the 90th Annual Meeting in 2022

  • WHEREAS, the worlds of tourism, arts, parks, entertainment and sports are constantly evolving, and

    WHEREAS, innovations in technologies enable cities and their residents to explore new ways to promote and enjoy arts, culture and sports without leaving their places, and

    WHEREAS, the Metaverse, Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and Virtual Gaming are some of these new innovations that offer great promise to cities, and

    WHEREAS, people will soon be able to visit cities' historical and landmark sites virtually, enjoy new virtual city experiences, attend sporting events in virtual stadiums and arenas, and enjoy many other virtual activities, and

    WHEREAS, cities will soon be able to raise funds through digital means to support local public arts projects, sponsor virtual concerts and festivals, and promote tourism all virtually, and

    WHEREAS, established businesses and new start-ups are each day entering these new spaces, and

    WHEREAS, new economic development and job opportunities will arise in cities as the Metaverse, NFTs, and Virtual Gaming grow in usage among city governments and their residents, and

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED mayors are encouraged to explore these new avenues in tourism, arts, parks, entertainment, and sports.

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, The United States Conference of Mayors and mayors be encouraged to work with organizations, such as the Metaverse Collaborative at New York University's School of Professional Studies (SPS) that can assist them in understanding ways to use these new worlds to promote their cities.
