Honoring Jackie Robinson and the 75th Anniversary of Breaking Baseball's Color Barrier

Adopted at the 90th Annual Meeting in 2022

  • WHEREAS, this year marks 75 years since the anniversary of Jackie Robinson's historic MLB debut on April 15, 1947, as he broke baseball's color barrier and, and The United States Conference of Mayors (The United States Conference of Mayors) is joining with Major League Baseball (MLB) and fans everywhere to honor the legacy of a man who played in both the Negro Leagues and Major League Baseball and changed our society forever.

    WHEREAS, On Friday, April 15, 2022, hundreds of mayors across the country collaborated with MLB by participating in the Tipping Your Cap initiative, which saluted the great man who paved the way for Black players in the major leagues by breaking the color barrier;

    WHEREAS, The PLAY BALL partnership between The United States Conference of Mayors and MLB was launched to promote and sustain youth participation in baseball in American cities. The program's youth engagement activities continue to be enriched by the great legacy of Jackie Robinson through local civic connections and Mayoral PLAY BALL events;

    WHEREAS, the sport of baseball is one of America's national pastimes and as part of the celebration, mayors are sharing photos and videos of their cities' historic connections to Jackie Robinson.

    WHEREAS, Mayors are encouraged to continue to share Jackie's contribution as a Hall of Fame and trailblazing player, social justice advocate, civil rights icon and pioneer in business and broadcasting each April 15th. Jackie Robinson's legacy is one that needs to continue to be taught and discussed for generations to come;

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The United States Conference of Mayors honors Jackie Robinson for his 75 years of service in breaking baseball's color barriers and his civil rights legacy.
