Resolution Supporting Sharing of Blockchain Technology Best Practices and Their Ability to Increase Financial Opportunities and Innovation
Adopted at the 90th Annual Meeting in 2022
WHEREAS, the blockchain can provide tools for cities to innovate, to streamline operations, functions, and to better deliver public services and increase access to opportunity for businesses and families; and
WHEREAS, national policy discussions are moving quickly, however, and often without a focus on blockchain's broader technological applications for cities and local governments; and
WHEREAS, it has become increasingly clear that there needs to be direct and coherent guidelines for the testing, adoption, and use of technologies built on blockchains in a safe, transparent manner that protects consumers and businesses; and
WHEREAS, the lack of best-practices and frameworks for adoption may put communities at a disadvantage and leave them unable to leverage potential opportunities; and
WHEREAS, it is imperative that technologies built on blockchain are developed to benefit constituents and localities as well as corporations and businesses,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The United States Conference of Mayors believes that technology built on blockchains have the potential to provide economic opportunity for local communities across America, and urges the development and sharing of best-practices and policy-frameworks to guide this innovation.
