Washington, DC—Last week, the Trump Administration declined to renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in its current form. In response, U.S. Conference of Mayors President Todd Gloria, Mayor of San Diego, issued the following the statement:
“The United States Conference of Mayors believes that the Administration’s decision not to renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement in its current form risks undermining one of America’s greatest economic strengths: a competitive, integrated North American economy that supports millions of American jobs and communities.
“For cities across America – from communities along our northern and southern borders to manufacturing centers, agricultural regions, and ports throughout the country – the USMCA has been a success. It has supported American workers, expanded markets for U.S. businesses, strengthened domestic manufacturing, and helped keep costs lower for families through integrated North American supply chains.
“The Conference urges the Administration to work with Canada and Mexico to preserve the trilateral framework that has delivered measurable benefits to the American people. At a time when families remain concerned about affordability and businesses need certainty to invest and create jobs, the United States should be reinforcing – not weakening – the economic partnerships that have made our communities more prosperous, resilient, and competitive.”
