U.S. Conference of Mayors Joins White House for a ‘Month of Action’ to Get Americans Vaccinated Against COVID-19

“Mayors Challenge” aims to reach 70% of adults with one shot of the vaccine by July 4th

Washington, D.C. – In conjunction with President Biden’s goal to vaccinate 70% of Americans by the 4th of July, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) announced today a Month of Action with the White House and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to increase vaccinations in cities across the country. Mayors across the country will be participating in a “Mayors Challenge” to increase vaccination rates and ensure equitable access to the vaccine by mobilizing their communities to do their part and get involved.

“Since day one, the Biden Administration has been committed to working with cities to tackle the COVID-19 crisis and get our nation back on track. Mayors are proud to take part in this month of action to get Americans vaccinated because this is an essential step to beating this virus once and for all,” said USCM President Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. “The light is at the end of the tunnel, and cities are ready to play their part to help sustain and bolster our nation’s recovery.”

“This campaign is singularly focused on empowering communities across the country to unite in common purpose to save lives,” said USCM Vice President Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley. “By all working together through this effort, federal and local leaders can provide the information and resources to make a real difference. Mayors are going to help put this pandemic behind us so we can focus on a strong, equitable recovery.”

“The country’s vaccination effort has been a success, but it also remains uneven in many places,” said Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, who serves as Chair of USCM’s Children, Health and Human Services Committee. “We cannot give up on harder-to-reach populations, and through this campaign we will be better able to educate people and deliver resources so they can access these safe, free, and effective vaccines. Mayors know our communities best, and I’m grateful to the Biden Administration for lifting up the voices of America’s mayors in this effort.”
