Supporting Blue Star Museums

Adopted at the 86th Annual Meeting in 2018

  • WHEREAS, the Blue Star Museums program is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, the Department of Defense, Blue Star Families, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and thousands of museums across America, offering free admission to the nation's active-duty personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserves, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend;

    WHEREAS, according to the Department of Defense, there are more than 1.3 million active duty military members and more than 800,000 reserves forces;

    WHEREAS, more than 2,000 museums participate each summer as a Blue Star Museum, reaching more than 900,000 active duty members and their families;

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The United States Conference of Mayors reaffirms its support of the National Endowment for the Arts, and specifically its partnership with the Department of Defense, Blue Star Families, and museums across America for the Blue Star Museum program; and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that The United States Conference of Mayors urges mayors and their local arts agencies to promote the Blue Star Museums program and to encourage museums in their communities to participate in this national program serving active duty personnel and their families.
