Washington, D.C. – President Joe Biden today gave a speech in Atlanta, calling for Congress to pass critical voting rights legislation this month. Last week, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) sent a letter signed by 151 bipartisan mayors, urging action on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (S. 4) and Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747). A PDF of the letter can be found here.

Following President Biden’s speech, the USCM released the following statement from Tom Cochran, CEO and Executive Director of USCM:

“We are at a crossroads in our democracy. In recent months, over a dozen states have passed 34 laws that will make it harder for Americans to vote. This historic attack on voting rights is unacceptable, and mayors across the nation applaud President Biden for re-iterating his commitment to passing voting rights legislation in Congress. America’s mayors have made protecting voting rights a top priority, and we are ready to work with the President and Congress to get this done. Our nation cannot afford anything less.”
