Washington, D.C. – Below is a statement from U.S. Conference of Mayors President Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer following the mass shooting today in San Jose:

“No community should have to face what San Jose is going through today. And yet hundreds of communities across America know all too well the trauma and pain caused by gun violence. This year alone there have already been more than 170 mass shootings in the United States.

“Mayors grieve with San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and those who have lost friends, neighbors, coworkers or members of their family in today’s mass shooting, and we thank the brave first responders who risked their lives to prevent further violence.

“The extreme level of violence we are seeing is just as unprecedented as it is preventable. No other developed country in the world experiences the level of gun violence we see every day. Today, we are reiterating our call to the Senate to do their job and take decisive action to protect Americans by strengthening our country’s background check system. This legislation has already been adopted by the House and is supported by the vast majority of Americans, across all parties. The only place where this remains a partisan issue is in the halls of the United States Senate. That must change. Enough is enough. We demand action now.”
