Washington, DC—Below is a statement by U.S. Conference of Mayors President and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer on the mass shooting in Boone, North Carolina:
“Once again, America woke up this morning to the news of yet another mass shooting – one that has taken the lives of four people, including two law enforcement officers. And once again, in its aftermath, we are left to wonder if this will be the moment that spurs the Senate to finally take action on two gun safety measures that will help to reduce gun violence without infringing on our Second Amendment rights. If not now, then when? How many people must be killed in mass shootings and on the streets of cities across the country for Congress to address this devastating epidemic? The nation’s mayors reiterate their call on the Senate to act now and fulfill their greatest responsibility, which is to protect the American people.
“We offer our condolences to the victims and their families and commend the brave law enforcement officers who responded so quickly. Although the road ahead will be difficult, we stand with the residents of Boone as they grieve and come together to heal.”
