Urge U.S. Senate to swiftly take up and pass H.R. 6

Washington, D.C.— Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, on a bipartisan vote. This legislation, if made law, would give children who came to America at a young age and have built their lives in America – also known as Dreamers – a pathway to lawful permanent residence and eventually, citizenship. Below is a statement by U.S. Conference of Mayors President and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer celebrating the bill’s passage:

“Dreamers and their families are our neighbors, our friends, our colleagues, and members of our families. They are integral to the fabric of the American tapestry and contribute immensely to our culture, our communities, and our economy. They have served on the frontlines during this devastating pandemic in the tens of thousands – many in health care positions – and they deserve to feel safe, welcome, and valued in our nation.

“America’s mayors are grateful to Speaker Pelosi and House leaders for fulfilling their promise to Dreamers all across the country. This legislation will help make our immigration system more humane, just, and fair – plain and simple. America’s mayors urge the Senate to act swiftly on this legislation so that President Biden can sign it into law.”
