Mayors Will Also Discuss New Data on Economic Toll of COVID-19 on U.S. Cities

Washington, D.C.— Today, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) will hold a media conference call at 1 pm ET to urge House and Senate negotiators to provide direct fiscal assistance to all cities in the upcoming pandemic recovery package. Thus far, most American cities have received no direct fiscal assistance from the federal government, and the situation is growing more dire every day. Nearly 90% of cities have reported they are projecting budget shortfalls. As a result, essential city services have been severely hampered by the economic impact of COVID-19, and the country’s economic recovery will be weakened if cities are left with gaping budget holes.

On the call, Mayors will also discuss a new report to be released Wednesday that brings into focus the severe economic impact that the pandemic is having on cities everywhere.
