In Dayton – Ground Zero for the Opioid Crisis – Mayors of Both Parties Come to the Table Equipped with Solutions That Have Worked in their Cities – as Congress, Trump Administration Continue to Underserve Local Communities Suffering from Public Epidemic

WASHINGTON, DC — On Tuesday, April 3, Dayton, OH Mayor Nan Whaley and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM), along with community partners and mayors from across Ohio, will discuss the successful solutions for combatting the opioid crisis from communities that are building these strategies from the ground up as Washington continues to underwhelm in the face of a crisis that, in Dayton alone, is causing two deaths per day. The opioid epidemic has claimed nearly 500,000 lives over the last decade nationally and was declared a national public health emergency, though the national response has been plagued by inaction. Mayors Larry Milligan (Middletown, OH), Lydia Mihalik (Findlay, OH) and Don Patterson (Kettering, OH) will join Mayors Whaley and Landrieu and public health experts to offer results-oriented perspectives and highlight mayors’ efforts to combat this epidemic on the local level while Washington has been all but absent despite a late-breaking bump in funding in the recent omnibus. Mayors have been leading the charge locally and doing more with less, securing scalable results in the face of utter devastation. To get real results, Washington should be working with mayors and local experts on both programs and funding, especially to determine where new funding should be directed.
