Mayors Garcetti, Elorza, Tait, Giles to Urge President to Continue DACA Program, Highlight Economic Contribution of DACA Recipients to Nation’s Economy

Press Conference Call Today, Tuesday, August 29 at 12:00 pm ET

Washington, D.C. — In response to reports that the Trump Administration may soon end a program that allows young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children to continue to contribute to the U.S. economy, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) will host a press call today, Tuesday, August 29th at 12:00 pm ET.

Bipartisan mayors led by USCM Latino Alliance Chair Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Immigration Reform Task Force Co-Chairs Mayors Jorge Elorza of Providence, R.I. and Tom Tait of Anaheim, Calif., and Conference Trustee Mayor John Giles of Mesa, Ariz., will call on President Trump to continue the successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and give Dreamers the opportunity to continue making invaluable contributions to America.

The Conference of Mayors has had strong policy supporting DACA since the program began. The call coincides with the Mayors’ National DACA Day of Action, a day led by USCM and bipartisan mayors around the country to showcase DACA’s broad support throughout the country and call on President Trump to maintain the program.  Last month, USCM President and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu sent a letter to President Trump urging him to continue the program.  At the USCM Annual Meeting in June, the nation’s mayors passed a resolution to support extension of the DACA program and permanent legal status for dreamers.
