FEMA has announced that the application period for Fire Prevention and Safety Grants will open December 17 and close January 18, 2013. These grants support two kinds of projects:

• those designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate the incidence of death and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards; and

• those aimed at improving firefighter safety, health and wellness through research and development that reduces firefighter fatalities and injuries.

  Local fire departments are eligible to apply under the first category. A total of $35 million are available. The maximum federal grant will be $1 million. Cost'sharing is required. Information is at http://www.fema.gov/welcome-assistance-firefighters-grant-program.
