American Cities Elect 38 New Mayors; 91 Percent of Incumbents Re-Elected

American cities, large and small, elected new mayors and city council members on November 8th. Many races were hotly contested while others were uncontested. There are new and incumbent mayors in city halls.

Conference Vice President Michael Guido was re-elected handily, garnering over 95 percent of the vote in Dearborn.

In Miami, incumbent Mayor Manny Diaz was re-elected with 65 percent of the vote from a field of five candidates.

Detroit incumbent Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick won his bid for re-election against former Deputy Mayor Freman Hendrix with 53 percent of the vote.

In St. Paul, Chris Coleman defeated Mayor Randy Kelly, capturing 69 percent of the vote.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Republican, was challenged by the Democratic candidate, former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, and won with 58 percent of the vote.

In Buffalo, New York State Senator Byron Brown, a Democrat, ran against the conservative Kevin Helfer for the seat left open by Anthony Masiello. Brown collected 64 percent of the vote and will be the first African American mayor in Buffalo.

In Cincinnati, former Ohio State Senator Mark Mallory defeated David Pepper, collecting 51 percent of the vote. Mallory became the first directly elected African American mayor of the city.

In Cleveland, Mayor-elect Frank Jackson defeated Mayor Jane Campbell with 51 percent of the votes.

San Diego Republican Mayor-elect Jerry Sanders, former police chief, ran for the open seat against Donna Frye, a city council member, and won with 54 percent of the votes.

In Toledo, Carlton S. Finkbeiner returns to office after serving as Toledo’s mayor from 1994 to 2002.

Below is the status of the 375 elections held nationwide November 8. Mayors were elected in 187 cities, the city council will choose their mayo in 184 cities and 4 cities will have a fun off next month.
