“We all need to be able to write Brownfield success stories and maintain economic competitiveness,” said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson at the 2005 Brownfields meeting in Denver on November 2-4. Speaking to a crowd of over 5,000 attendees, the largest gathering of Brownfield supporters since EPA began holding annual conventions, Johnson remarked, “It is important to find innovative solutions and expand our efforts in the development of Brownfields. EPA looks toward the future by quantifying end results, and getting people and property back to work. We are all invested in the health of our environment with cleaner air, water and land for the next generation.”
Johnson was proud to announce the Final Standard on All Appropriate Inquiry. He remarked that it would set the standard and allow builders and developers alike the ability to be economically efficient and environmentally friendly. Johnson also went on to discuss the importance of partnerships and working to establish models based on lessons learned.
While being received as the keynote speaker of the event, Johnson also had the opportunity to present the latest addition to the world of Brownfields development and awareness, the Brownfields merit badge. Sustainable Long Island and the Girl Scouts of America jointly developed a merit badge based solely on making girls aware of brownfields throughout their communities. “I am happy to transfer knowledge to a new generation,” remarked Johnson.
