In January, Jerry Abramson, Mayor of Louisville from 1986 through 1998 and the 1993-94 President of The U.S. Conference of Mayors, will become the first mayor of the new Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government. The consolidation of the city of Louisville and Jefferson County governments, approved by voters in November 2000, becomes effective in January and makes Louisville/Jefferson County the nation's 16th largest community. The legislative branch of the new government takes the form of a 26-member Metro Council, with each Council member representing a district having about 25,000 residents.
