Incumbents Hold Their Own in Mayoral Elections

Incumbents fared well in many of the races where they were not term-limited. Incumbents returned to office include: Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson, Columbus (OH) Mayor Michael B. Coleman, Charlotte Mayor Patrick McCrory, Akron Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic, Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley and Tucson Mayor Robert E. Walkup. Two hotly contested races resulted in runoffs in term-limited Houston and San Francisco.
