Mayor Newsom Withdraws from Gubernatorial Bid
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom withdrew is his bid to become governor of California. Newsom cited his family and city hall duties for withdrawing from the race. “With a young family and responsibilities at city hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs – and should be – done.”
Newsom was elected mayor in 2003 succeeding Willie Brown and becoming San Francisco’s youngest mayor in 100 years. Newsom was re-elected in 2007.
City Beautiful Commission Honors Mayor Rothschild
University Heights (OH) Mayor Beryl E. Rothschild was honored on October 22 by the City Beautiful Commission for her 32 years of service. Rothschild has served eight consecutive terms as mayor, and is retiring at the end of 2009. In her honor, the Purvis Park pool will be named the Beryl E. Rothschild Municipal Pool, and an access drive to the pool from Cedar Road will be named Rothschild Plaza.
