Mayors Promote 2002 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
November 4, 2002
Mayors gave their full support to 2002 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) by issuing proclamations and press releases, writing letters to the editor, and holding related events. Mayoral breast cancer awareness activities included: (1) conducting public information campaigns; (2) fundraising; (3) special outreach to ethnic/racial minorities, seniors, and underserved populations; (4) sponsoring educational programs for city employees with time off for screening; (5) working with coalitions to promote awareness; and (6) undertaking special projects to raise awareness.
One hundred twenty one mayors reported that they issued proclamations, most of which were displayed in the offices of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. For a complete listing of mayors issuing proclamations, as well as descriptions of local awareness activities, visit the Conference web site usmayors.org/cancer.
