Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, right, joined Commissioner James T. Joyce and members of the Fire Department's Gold Badge Society for the ceremony at the Fire Academy on October 10. "The Wall of Honor serves as an inspiration to the many members of the Chicago Fire Department who pass by it every day," Daley said. "Firefighters are willing to lay their lives on the line at a moment's notice, and for all too many of them, the job of saving lives ended up costing them their own." The case holds the badges of 563 firefighters killed in the line of duty from the years 1865 to 2000.
