About the Mayor

November 1, 2004

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley was named on the Environmental Power List by Organic Style Magazine in their November 2004 edition. The magazine looked for 50 people who "made specific, concrete changes during the past few years — sponsoring environmental legislation, fighting for our rights in courts, protecting our children's health, raising money and taking action that influenced the behavior of millions."

Daley, who was ranked 28th in the nation and the only Mayor listed, was acknowledged for his efforts in recycling, protecting the Great Lakes, and "turning his hometown into an environmentally-friendly city, with the new 24.5 Millennium Park and a burgeoning number of rooftop gardens adding to the green."

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom says he doesn't try to create history, it just happens when he does what he thinks is right.

Newsom has appointed women to head six major public safety departments in the city. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, there are more women in charge of agencies in San Francisco that deal with life-and-death emergencies than in any other major city in the nation.

Newsom named a woman as fire chief in January 2004, and as medical examiner in February. In April he appointed women as port director and police chief. In August, a woman took over as head of the Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security, and as general manager of the city's Public Utilities Commission.

"I don't exclude men... When I ask for resumes, I don't say, 'send me only women. -- I'm looking for the best choice, -- Newsom said.
