USCM Wins National Save for Retirement Leadership Award
The National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators (NAGDCA), at its September annual meeting in Baltimore, awarded The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) the National Save for Retirement Week Leadership Award. The award recognized USCM for its leadership in the development of the USCM Save for Retirement Campaign Toolkit, part of USCM’s ongoing initiative to promote saving for retirement among America’s city workers.
The Toolkit is a guide to assist mayors and their department heads in communicating with city workers about the importance of saving for retirement through their deferred compensation program. We worked with our partner of 30 years, Nationwide Retirement Solutions, in developing this exciting initiative.
“With markets in flux, the economy weakening, and health care costs skyrocketing, The U.S. Conference of Mayors believes the issue of retirement security for city workers will continue to be significant and high profile,” said USCM CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran. “There is a huge opportunity for mayors to encourage city employees to save for retirement through deferred compensation programs, and in doing so retain and attract highly qualified people and earn the goodwill of your employees.”
The USCM Save for Retirement Campaign will continue beyond the National Save for Retirement Week, which is October 19-25. Mayors are being asked to continue to:
Reach out to employees to promote the importance and benefits of saving for retirement through a deferred compensation program tailored for public employees;
Promote city-sanctioned informational workshops for employees that are conducted by the city’s deferred compensation provider;
Sign the Pledge Card, which expresses a strong commitment to be a part of helping city workers save for retirement and join the high profile national PR campaign to promote retirement savings.
“The widening global economic crisis says to me that there has never been a more important time for mayors to take a leadership role in helping our own employees prepare for their financial futures,” said Stamford (CT) Mayor Dannel P. Malloy, who chairs USCM’s Save for Retirement initiative. “With the financial tools already available to city workers, mayors just need to increase the level of awareness concerning the importance and availability of tax deferred retirement plans. And now is the time.”
