Congress Rejects Proposed Cuts in Homeland Security Grant Programs

By Laura DeKoven Waxman
September 29, 2008

The continuing resolution working its way through Congress as U.S. Mayor goes to press includes three FY 2009 security-related appropriations bills – defense, military construction/veterans, and homeland security. The homeland security spending bill increases funding by six percent next year, providing $39.98 billion – $2.36 billion more than the President requested for FY 2009 and $2.31 billion more than was provided for FY 2008.

The bill rejects the President’s proposal to cut $2 billion from homeland security grant programs, providing FY 2008 levels or more for nearly all programs. The table below shows funding for key individual homeland security grant programs as well as funding for other Department programs and areas of interest to cities.
