Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, seeking an unprecedented fifth term, led the field of four in a nonpartisan election with 50.5 percent of the vote on September 22. Finishing second with 24 percent was city Councilor Michael Flaherty. Menino and Flaherty will now square off in the November 3 runoff election. Voter turnout exceeded expectations with 23 percent of the city’s 353,683 registered voters showing up at the polls.
