Mayors attending the Fall Leadership Meeting in Trenton on Friday, September 14, paid tribute to the late Trenton Mayor Arthur J. Holland who was President of The United States Conference of Mayors in 1988 and 1989.
Holland’s widow, Betty Holland, her children and grandchildren, mayors, Conference staff, and long-time associates of Holland, who died of cancer in 1989, attended the memorial ceremony in Trenton City Hall.
Current Conference President Douglas H. Palmer said he wanted to host a special event for Holland who served as Mayor of Trenton for 27 years.
Palmer spoke of Holland’s distinguished service and steps to promote racial harmony in New Jersey’s capital city.
Conference Executive Director Tom Cochran recalled that Holland was instrumental in working with USCM in helping Argentina create a countrywide Federation of Municipalities that now has 1,300 mayor members from all parties in that country.
The ceremony, featuring a ceremonial wreath paying tribute to Holland’s leadership and family, also featured remarks by Betty Holland who thanked Palmer, The Conference of Mayors, and local guests for coming together in Trenton to honor her late husband.
