USCM President Miami Mayor Diaz Announces Dates, Locations for Final Mayors Action Forums

Poverty Forum – Los Angeles: September 23-24

 

Tuesday, September 23:

  • 7:00pm – Depart Sheraton Hotel

  • 7:30pm to 9:30pm – Light Reception followed by an intimate dinner, hosted by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, USCM Poverty Task Force Chair at his home – Getty House

    Wednesday, September 24:

  • 7:30am – Depart Sheraton Hotel for Maxine Waters Employment Preparatory Center

  • 8:30am to 12:30 noon – Working Session

  • 12:30pm – Press Conference

  • 1:00pm to 2:30pm – Closing Luncheon

    In Los Angeles, mayors will: 1) Review the USCM adopted policy on poverty which emerged from the Villaraigosa Poverty, Work and Opportunity Task Force; 2) Work on jobs and workforce proposals recognizing that the present workforce federal system is not meeting the goal of matching trained workers to meet the jobs offered by the business community; 3) Continue efforts focused on public schools, school reform and the dropout problem – covering birth through High School for youth; 4) Review the recent initiatives contained in the recently enacted housing bill, as well as other issues in alleviating the housing challenges of middle- and low-income residents of cities; and 5) Discuss financial literacy and entrepreneurship - providing opportunities for people to own their own businesses.

    Environment and Energy Forum – Miami: October 1-2

     

    Wednesday, October 1:

  • 6:30pm to 8:00pm – Reception at Intercontinental Hotel

    Thursday, October 2:

  • 8:00am to 12:00 noon – Working Session at Intercontinental Hotel

  • 12:30pm – Press Conference

  • 1:00pm to 2:30pm – Closing Luncheon

  • 4:00pm – Mayors traveling to Palm Beach (see next section) depart Intercontinental Hotel by bus

    Key subjects to be covered include: 1) National commitments and a federal partnership needed by the nearly 900 mayors who have signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement; 2) Securing full funding for our Energy Block Grant; 3) Green jobs and metro economies; 4) Moving toward energy independence by getting off our oil addiction – wind, solar, nuclear, geothermal, energy efficiency, etc.; and 5) Key legislative and administrative initiatives for the next President and the 111th Congress.

    Arts and Tourism Forum – Palm Beach: October 2-3

    The fifth Mayors ’08 Action Forum - Arts and Tourism – will be held on the front end of the USCM Fall Leadership Meeting in Palm Beach.

     

    Thursday, October 2:

  • 7:00pm – Reception at The Breakers Hotel

  • 9:00pm – Group Viewing of Vice Presidential Debate in St. Louis

    Friday, October 3:

  • 8:00am to 11:30am – Mayors Action Forum on Arts and Tourism

  • 11:30am Press Conference on Arts/Tourism

    Issues to be covered at the Arts and Tourism Forum will include: 1) Federal arts funding; 2) A cabinet level position on culture and tourism; 3) An international United States destination marketing program; 4) Travel visa waivers; and 5) Reforming and modernizing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA); and 6) Restructuring of the airline industry.

    Note, the USCM Fall Leadership Meeting will continue after the Forum through October 4 with participation by the top domestic policy advisors for the McCain and Obama presidential campaigns, a discussion of key issues related to FEMA and other matters.
