Speaking at the July 14 plenary session of the National Association of Counties Annual Conference in Milwaukee, Conference President Hempstead (NY) Mayor James Garner told county delegates "Our two organizations have a long history of working effectively together. As president of the Conference, I can assure that I will continue to work to build on and strengthen that partnership."

Garner told county delegates that he had selected sustainable development as the focus of his administration. He explained that the objective of sustainable development is to make America's cities more manageable, productive and competitive, as well as attractive and livable. As chief executive officers of their communities, he said mayors must have a comprehensive, tolerant and inclusive vision for their cities. And, he added, "to remain competitive, today and into the future, that vision must be sustainable."

Garner also commended NACo president-elect Boone County (MO) Commissioner Karen Miller who, in the past, has focused on sustainability and he welcomed the opportunity to work with her as she assume the leadership of NACo. Garner also announced that the Conference will continue to work with NACo and other Big 7 organizations on other important issues such as more funding for homeland security, the reauthorization of TEA 21, collecting taxes on remote sales, and Medicaid relief.

In closing, Garner said "what is unique about NACo and the Conference of Mayors is that mayors and county leaders come together from small and large cities, Democrats and Republicans, liberal and conservative to speak with one voice to Congress and the administration." And, he added, "it is that sprit of cooperation that makes our organizations an effective voice in Washington and with the press and general public."
