Honolulu Mayor Hannemann to Host US-Japan Mayors Meeting

Mayors from the United States and Japan will gather in Honolulu August 20-21 for the Ninth U.S.-Japan Mayors Fellowship Exchange Conference. Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, chair of the Conference of Mayors Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment and Sports Committee, will host the event. It is being organized by the Japan Association of City Mayors and the United States Conference of Mayors.

Issues to be discussed include what cities in both countries are doing to address climate protection and sustainable development. The program will also include a tour of some of Honolulu’s innovative municipal projects, including the preservation efforts at the world famous Hanauma Bay, and the revitalization initiatives in Waikiki.

Conference President Trenton Mayor Douglas H. Palmer will lead the U.S. delegation. President of the Japan Association of City Mayors Akita Mayor Norihisa Satake will lead the delegation from Japan.
