Miami Mayor Diaz Addresses Drug Court Graduates

From City Hall Press Release
July 25, 2005

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz spoke before 70 graduates of the Miami-Dade County Drug Court on July 15. The Drug Court is a diversion and treatment program created in 1989. The program provides certain drug offenders with the opportunity to avoid prosecution by participating in rehabilitation programs until they recover sufficiently to have their cases dismissed. Diaz was present to offer encouraging words to the most recent group of individuals who have successfully completed their drug court requirements.

The event was a fitting end to a week of marked accomplishments in Miami’s efforts to effectively reduce crime throughout the city. On July 11, the Miami Police Department made nearly 300 arrests as a result of Operation Difference, Miami’s year long effort to combat crime in its neighborhoods by placing a number of officers in sting and reverse-sting operations. Diaz also announced the implementation of a new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, which will replace a 21-year-old system and allow faster, more accurate input of emergency information.
