During the June 22 annual meeting of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors, the president, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, urged mayors to find out where all of the presidential candidates stand on issues important to cities. She encouraged them to discuss the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 2007 10-Point Plan: Strong Cities, Strong Families, For a Strong America with the presidential candidates and insist on their support for the plan in the upcoming 2008 election. She praised Conference President Doug Palmer for leading the effort to develop the bipartisan plan, which provides an action agenda for addressing many of the key concerns of cities.
Newly elected mayors were welcomed into the organization, as Franklin shared information about NCDM plans for the coming months. The organization also held elections to fill two vacant offices. Franklin nominated and mayors elected Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin as secretary and Pomona Mayor Norma Torres as treasurer.
