Los Angeles Acts to End Homelessness

Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn joined other local mayors to announce the creation of a Blue Ribbon Panel that aims to end homelessness in the Los Angeles area by 2013.

"Cities and the county of Los Angeles must work together to prevent families, the disabled, foster kids, and parolees from becoming homeless," said Hahn. "It is time to stop talking about the homelessness crisis and take action."

Bring LA Home will include experts from government, law enforcement, religious organizations, social service groups, the business community, and homeless individuals. The group will draft a plan, taking into account the need for affordable housing, mental health care, and treatment for substance abuse.

Many cities, including Indianapolis, Philadelphia, and New York City, have issued their own plans to battle homelessness and many more cities are preparing to join in this critical endeavor. During the 71st Annual Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Denver, the nation's mayors agreed to back the Bush Administration's 10-year plan to end homelessness.
