National Park Service Can Assist Cities

Chairing the Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment and Sports Committee, New Orleans Mayor Mitchell Landrieu led the committee members through a discussion of a number of resolutions and a presentation on ways the National Park Service can assist cities. Peggy O’Dell, Deputy Director for Operations with the National Park Service, described numerous programs that the National Parks Service has for cities including the Land and Water Conservation Fund and historic tax credits. Catherine Nagel, Executive Director of City Parks Alliance, and Liam Kavanagh, New York City First Commissioner for Parks and City Parks Alliance board member, described how their organization can assist cities undertake innovative parks programs. Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory talked about how his city will be hosting the 2012 World Choir Games (July 4–14, 2012) and encouraged cities to sign their choirs up. Finally, Landrieu talked about the World Cultural Economic Forum that will be held in his city May 3–4, 2012. It will be an opportunity for mayors and business and cultural leaders from around the world to gather to discuss ways to promote cultural activities as economic tools.
