Concluding their 70th Annual Meeting in Madison, members of The United States Conference of Mayors named Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino President and Hempstead Mayor James A. Garner Vice President of their organization for 2002-2003. Akron Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic was elected Chairman of the Advisory Board.

The 13-member Nominating Committee chaired by Willie L. Brown, Jr., Mayor of San Francisco, recommended Menino, Garner and Plusquellic for the Conference's top leadership posts when it met June 15 during the Annual Meeting.

In addition to selecting the three top officers, the more than 200 mayors in Madison for their annual five-day meeting filled vacancies on the organization's Trustees and Advisory Board. Named as Trustees were Mayors Elizabeth G. Flores of Laredo, Scott L. King of Gary, Arlene J. Mulder of Arlington Heights, Douglas H. Palmer of Trenton and Bill Purcell of Nashville. All had been members of the Advisory Board.

New members of the Advisory Board are Mayors James Brainard of Carmel (IN), Shirley Dean of Berkeley, Manuel A. Diaz of Miami, Glenda E. Hood of Orlando, Harvey Johnson of Jackson (MS), Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit, Jorge A. Santini of San Juan, Charles F. Tooley of Billings and Judith Valles of San Bernardino.

The new leaders of the Conference of Mayors were elected June 17 during the closing session of the organization's 70th Annual Meeting at the Madison Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.
