USCM, NRS Build on Success at 78th Annual Meeting
June 28, 2010
For more than 30 years, Nationwide Retirement Solutions (NRS) has worked with the United States Conference of Mayors to help city workers plan for their financial futures. At the 78th Annual Meeting, that longstanding relationship provided new insights into the challenges ahead for employees and trusted solutions to help overcome them.
Raising Awareness is First Step Towards Solution
To solve the problem of potential shortfalls in retirement savings, employees need to be aware that the problem exists. NRS Strategic Relations Vice President Louie Watson met with mayors in order to raise awareness of the issues many city workers may be facing in the coming years.
"In today's economy, you-re looking for somebody to be there for your employees," said Watson. "Our employees are there on the forefront working with your employees in helping them understand the benefits of staying put and saving money for retirement."
Helping Employees Reach Goals
For every problem, there is a solution—and, often, a new opportunity. The Conference of Mayors 457 (b) Program provides city workers with the opportunity to enjoy tax-deferred growth from their investment, which may help their assets compound faster.
And, unlike other qualified plans, the Conference of Mayors 457 (b) Program lets participants access funds without penalty upon severance from employment (although ordinary income taxes will apply) or remain in the plan beyond their retirement date in order to potentially grown their retirement savings.
Measuring Success
The mission of NRS is to help more people achieve their goals. The 78th Annual Meeting offered employees a way to transform the volatility of the past into potential solutions for the future through flexible, tax-deferred investments.
In her introduction of Watson, Conference of Mayors President Burnsville (MN) Mayor Elizabeth B. Kautz thanked NRS for their continued support. "Nationwide Retirement Solutions has paired with the Conference of Mayors and city workers across the nation to provide the deferred compensation that so many workers need to live securely in retirement."
NRS has been a trusted provider of public'sector retirement plans for nearly 1.6 million government employee participants across nearly 4,000 cities and municipalities for more than 30 years.
"Those are numbers we-re very proud of," said Watson. "What it comes down to is helping each public'sector employee, one employee at a time, plan for and live in retirement."
