With the Republican National
Convention in Philadelphia only one and one-half months away, the
Republican Mayors and Local Officials (RMLO) are preparing an active
schedule of events for its members and colleagues designed to highlight
the role of Republican mayors and local officials in the national arena.
Under the leadership of Omaha
Mayor Hal Daub, a large number of RMLO members met in Seattle to discuss
the convention, and plan strategy in support of their presidential
candidate, Texas Governor George W. Bush.
In addition, host Mayor John
Street of Philadelphia stopped into the meeting to offer an early welcome
to the Republican mayors.
RMLO will converge on
Philadelphia from July 31st though August 3rd as part of a coalition of
state and local elected organizations. The coalition includes:
-
Republican Mayors and Local
Officials
-
Republican Attorney Generals
Association
National Conference of
Republican County Officials
-
National Republican Legislators
Association
-
Republican Lt. Governors
Caucus
-
Republican Association of
Secretaries of State
-
Republican State Treasurers
Caucus
RMLO is currently working with
the other coalition members, as well as organizations such as The U.S.
Conference of Mayors, in planning a number of activities.
On Sunday evening, July 31, there
will be a State and Local Opening Gala to welcome officials to
Philadelphia and the convention. The event will be the first opportunity
for coalition members, friends and colleagues to gather.
There will also be a Late Night
Dinner for Mayors, most likely on Tuesday, August 2, in downtown
Philadelphia. This event will include a formal reception and dinner,
followed by late night entertainment and live music.
In terms of the convention
itself, the coalition will have space in Tent Alley between the First
Union Center and the Philadelphia Spectrum. Tent Alley will provide an
opportunity for the coalition, other alliances and organizations to
socialize in an open forum. The coalition has also petitioned for a
club-level suite in the First Union Center every night of the
convention.
