Charleston (SC) Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. on a Sunday June 4 Plenary Session described the Jefferson Award for Public Service, saying that mayors have the best opportunity to understand the value of community service. They can do this by nominating exceptional volunteers in their cities and to inspire others to become involved.

The Jefferson Awards were established in 1972 to encourage and honor individuals, their achievements and contributions through public and community service.

Sam Beard of the Jefferson Awards program also spoke, describing the program’s history.
